As an Asian American myself, I am always inspired and supported by other Asian Americans. I believe that having a directory to showcase the products, foods, and services of Asian American-owned businesses can help not only business owners succeed but help the community find the specific goods and services they want as well.
Asian Americans make up only 6.4% of business owners in the United States. A website directory for Asian American business owners would provide a centralized platform for customers to discover and connect with these businesses, increasing visibility and customer base. It promotes diversity, inclusivity, and recognition of their contributions.
A competitive analysis was conducted to gauge which features should be included in a useful business directory. Eight different business directories, for both wide and small audiences, were in the sample.
Positive: Intentionalist and AAPI Business showcased each business under categories with intent, and were also intuitive to use. Google and Yelp informed users of the quality of service and products through other users’ reviews.
Negative: Some directories such as CitySearch, Asian American Chamber, and Women and FunTimes Magazine, lacked description and images to convey information about their featured businesses. Also the latter two directories had a lack of categories, which led to lack of organization and diminished ease of use.
The business directory must display enough information, but be simple and easy to use for both users who are consumers and business owners.
Many online directories do not consider accessibility.
Online directories typically do not have an engaging browsing experience.
Online directories need an intuitive navigation layout.
In order to have an intuitive information architecture, I created a sitemap organized based on different categories of business and functionalities.
