Why I made this project
113 home fires were reported in Philadelphia in 2023, showing the urgent need for developing an app for fire safety. By creating an app that provides important information on fire prevention, safety measures, and emergency response, we can help raise awareness and empower individuals to take proactive steps to protect themselves and their homes.
Market Research
Although the incidences of residential fires decreased nationwide in the past decade, overall deaths in residential fires have increased by 8%, reaching a high of 2,840 deaths in 2021. Many of these deaths may not have happened had there been increased prevention and awareness.
Competitive Analysis
Although I have researched two well-established Paint and Sip franchises and Color Me Mine, a different art class franchise, none of them offered a dedicated app, so I focused on their mobile-optimized websites.
Positive: The strengths for Painting with a Twist, Pinot’s Palette, and Color Me Mine were that they offered easy navigation. dedicated pages for each location. Both of the Paint and Sip sites had an intuitive and simple user flow for booking classes.
Negative: Color Me Mine, on the other hand, offered class bookings only for certain locations, and its busy background and quickly moving carousel image could negatively impact accessibility and mobile optimization. Painting with a Twist also had some areas with too small text which may be issue for the visually challenged.
User Research
I developed interview questions based on NFPA statistics, which were then used to conduct user interviews. Most participants reported they do not actively look up fire safety information and lack an emergency plan for the home. The feedback received through research determined that having a concise guide with positive reinforcement and accountability can help them.
